About MaysvillePicture of Maysville Real Estate

Maysville is a small town, with a population of just over 1,000 people according to the 2010 census. The town is only 0.8 square miles in size, which has allowed it to keep its quaint atmosphere even with the nearby presence of multiple military bases. Maysville is situated on the White Oak River and for many years served as a trading town. In its earliest form, the town was known as Young's Crossing, after the man who owned a large portion of the land along the river. The name Maysville came in the late 1800s as a means of honoring the May family, the head of which was responsible for founding and teaching in the town’s elementary school. The town was incorporated in 1897.

Around the same time the town was incorporated, it received an economic boost from the arrival of the East Carolina Rail Company, and then another boost in 1940 from the military activity in preparing for World War II. Since the establishment of MCB Camp Lejeune and other military bases in the area, Maysville has been proud to serve as host town for military families from all parts of the country.

Maysville Attractions

Aside from the proximity to Jacksonville and the military bases, Maysville also sits astride the border of the Croatan National Forest. The forest provides miles of hiking trails and great camping opportunities, as well as a large lake in the middle of the forest for swimming, boating, or fishing. The town also has a number of parks and other recreational facilities and hosts such events as Fall Ball at the Park twice a month on Wednesday evenings. Many other community activities take place regularly, like dances, festivals, runs, and community appreciation days.
